Obituary for Lulu Little Atkinson Jolliff

KENLY – Lulu Little Atkinson Jolliff, 92, passed away Wednesday, October 23, 2019.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at Kenly Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Devon Varnum, Rev. George Arrant, and Rev. Rick Stewart officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives at the church one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be held in a private setting for the family at Kenly Cemetery.

Lulu was born in Pitt County on August 25, 1927 to the late Richard Sampson Atkinson and Emily Little Atkinson. Growing up in Johnston County, Lulu graduated from Kenly High School. She would then go on to attend Flora McDonald College, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and East Carolina University; the latter two from which she obtained her Master’s degree in Social Work and Counseling, respectively.

Her service in social work and counseling touched many lives. Following her clinical psychology social work, she became Director of Social Services of Johnston County. Even after her “retirement,” Lulu continued her work, eventually retiring at the age of 78. She was a recipient of the “Citizen of the Year” award from the town of Kenly and was often the Grand Marshall of the town Christmas parade.

Anyone in need of counseling services need not just call upon Lulu at the office; Lulu opened her home, her heart, and her ear to anyone in need. She was truly a mother to anyone who crossed her door, without regard to race, religion, or creed. She loved all of God’s people and her life-long career will be remembered as a culmination of her dedication to her patients, their families, and the Kenly community.

Lulu married Jesse S. Jolliff, Sr. and the couple settled in her native Kenly. Later in life, the couple would continue their efforts in service and founded Kenly Area Ministries. The two were also part of the traveling singing group, “The Messengers,” in which the couples’ sons were often involved. Lulu was a faithful Christian lady, and was an active member of Kenly Missionary Baptist Church where she served as a deaconess, sang in the choir, and taught Sunday School. In her later years when Lulu was not able to attend, her Sunday School class joined their teacher at her home, where she continued to serve her Lord for many years.

In addition to her parents, Lulu was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse S. Jolliff, Sr. (Oct. 23, 2008); and her brother, Richard “Dick” Sampson Atkinson, Jr. and his wife, Barbara Atkinson.

She is survived by her sons, Jesse Jolliff, Jr. of Kenly, Matt Phillips Jolliff and wife, Jo Dee Beasley Jolliff of Greer, SC; grandchildren, Noah Thomas Jolliff and wife, Linda Jolliff, Bryan Jolliff and wife, Lisa Haney Jolliff, Jackie Smith and husband, Jake Smith; and her great-grandchildren, William Jolliff, Bruce Greyson Jolliff, Lexi Harper Jolliff, Taylor Smith, and Jackson Smith.

Flowers are welcome, or in lieu memorial contributions may be made in Lulu’s memory to Kenly Missionary Baptist Church: 1730 NC-222, Kenly, NC 27542; -or- Kitty Askins Hospice Center: 107 Handley Park Ct, Goldsboro, NC 27534.
