Obituary for Royce Wayne Exum

Royce Wayne Exum, 92 of Kenly NC, went to meet Jesus with arms wide open on 23rd December 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bessie (Barnes) and Milford Exum and brother Wilbur “Bill” Exum.

A musician of many talents. Royce could play guitar (lap steel & dobro), banjo, mandolin, keyboards and the harmonica. He serenaded his family and friends on special occasions and during the holidays. Throughout his life he sang professionally from music halls, honky-tonks to retirement homes and churches. He loved country, bluegrass and gospel from his roots. Sometimes he performed with others but often sang solo.

Royce was an avid fisherman and hunter and will miss his annual adventures to Coffman Cove in the Prince of Wales Island, Alaska. While catching Silver Salmon on the Klawock River bank, he always felt that the land was still like God had made it. Many winters throughout his life he hunted deer with his dear friend Ross Mitchon “Hunky,” his son, Rob, brother Bill and nephew, Richard Ackerman in South Texas, Colorado and Wyoming. Many a cold night next to the campfire, they shared their dinner meal, the challenges they faced in their daily lives, and told an occasional lie about the rack on the last deer that got away.

Royce served his country in the US Army during the Korean War and was awarded several service medals for his bravery. After the war he joined his brother Bill and his wife Lucy in Corpus Christi, Texas and lived there for almost 60 years. He worked and retired from the Corpus Christi Army Depot for the Army Aeronautical Depot Maintenance Center (ARADMAC) as a machinist; troubleshooting, fabricating machine parts and repairing Army helicopters.

Royce will forever be remembered by his honesty and integrity. He was a loving, kind and dependable man, and made an impact of every person in his life. He loved his church and spread his faith to many while doing many good works for our Lord. Royce always said that God doesn’t seek you – you seek God – then God begins to teach…

Royce is survived by his only son, Rob of Corpus Christi, TX; niece, Cynthia (Exum) Metcalf of Herndon, VA; special cousins and their families Connie (Exum) House & Peggy (Exum) Anderson both of Selma, Reba (Webster) Barnes of Goldsboro and Jimmy Barnes of Jacksonville, NC.

Graveside services will be held at 11AM, Thursday, December 27th at the Barnes Family Cemetery in Kenly. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to White Oak Presbyterian Church, 699 Polly Watson Road, Freemont, NC 27830.
