Our Story

In the late 1800’s, Henry Edgerton owned and operated a furniture store in downtown Kenly. As the need for funeral goods and services began to arise, he recognized the opportunity to better serve his community with an addition of caskets to his inventory. In 1898 Mr. Edgerton established the funeral home and served as a funeral director from the upstairs portion of his furniture store, with an advertised slogan, “Serving families from the cradle to the grave.”

Mr. H. M. Grizzard worked for Mr. Edgerton and acquired an interest in the furniture and funeral business. In August of 1948, Mr. Grizzard announced the grand opening of Grizzard Funeral Home at a new location of 103 East Second Street.

Through the years the funeral home was handed down through the Grizzard family to Mr. Grizzard’s son, H. M. Grizzard, Jr., and grandson, H. M. Grizzard, III (Mickey). The Grizzard family worked tirelessly to offer the most up to date service and equipment. In June of 1974, Mickey initiated the remodeling of the facility, along with the addition of the chapel.

During the mid 1980’s the funeral home was purchased by Dan Shackleford before being sold to Gerald Coley in 1990. Mr. Coley renamed the business Coley Funeral Home, making several updates as well as adding the sunroom to the main building. When the business was sold to Anthony Minshew in 2006, the name was changed to Minshew-Coley Funeral Home.

In January of 2015, the funeral home was acquired by brothers, Lynn and Brian Taylor, who are affiliated with Seymour Funeral Home of Goldsboro, Rouse Funeral Home of La Grange, and Tyndall Funeral Home of Mount Olive. Kenly Funeral and Cremation Services has carried on its tradition of personal concern, attentive service, and deep compassion for families who have suffered the loss of a loved one.
